Professor Pattanaik is Awarded Professorship

The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland has recently awarded Professor Prasanta K. Pattanaik with a Carnegie Centenery Professorship for Fall Quarter, 2006. Professor Pattanaik will be staying abroad in Scotland for approximately three months as one of only two professors appointed to the visiting professorship, after having been nominated along with a number of other highly qualified scholars from various countries.
“I am very pleased and honored,” said Professor Pattanaik, “It will be nice to visit again; I lived in the United Kingdom for 14 years, and so I have many familiar faces to see.”
During his stay, Professor Pattanaik will be giving a number of public lectures and seminars all over Scotland, although the University of Stirling will remain his primary host institution. Pattanaik will also be collaborating on some research that concerns the major scopes of his study, such as welfare economics and theories on social choice.
The scheme of the Carnegie Centenary Professorship is to attract nominees of the highest academic standing who will contribute to academic/scientific developments in the Scottish Universities in their particular fields, whether through teaching, research, or both. Nominations are made by invitation alone and normally come from the Principals of the Scottish Universities. Every year Scottish Universities submit proposals with lists of names pertaining to those they wish to possibly grant a professorship.
Professor Pattanaik, a professor at UCR since 1991, has also recently received two other academic honors in 2004. In February of 2004, he was elected President of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare, to take his position in 2006 until 2007. In April later that year he also was honored with a fellowship by the Public Choice Society, an organization consisting of scholars from various disciplines who work and study problems relating to public choice.
