Members of the Campus Community

Dear Colleagues:

I am deeply saddened to report that Professor John Ashe, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, died Friday, October 1, at the age of 60 after a short illness.

Professor Ashe earned his bachelor's degree in psychology at UC Riverside and his Ph.D. in biological sciences at UC Irvine; he served as a postdoctoral researcher in neuropharmacology in 1977 at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. Professor Ashe joined the faculty at UCR in 1980 as a professor in the Department of Psychology. Between 1997 and 2002, he served as Chair of the Department of Psychology, a period that saw significant growth in the stature of the department and the number of academic programs. Since 1992 he held faculty appointments in both the Department of Psychology and the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience. He studied systems neuroscience, which includes the synaptic connections between brain cells.

Professor Ashe, valued for his wisdom and sage advice, was a genuinely kind person whose gentle and endearing nature embraced all whom he met. He was keenly sensitive about diversity in the faculty ranks and helped on various committees whose objective was working towards this goal. Throughout his career, Professor Ashe was a devoted mentor to students. He frequently participated in programs that would attract underrepresented minorities into scientific fields. Professor Ashe, who worked with all the disciplines in the college, was also a jazz fan who kept a picture of Miles Davis on his office wall, right above the model of a brain on his desk.

Professor Ashe is survived by his son John Miles Ashe, his mother Gloria Faison, a brother and two sisters. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 8, 2004, at 12:00 noon at Brown Colonial Mortuary, 204 West 17th Street, Santa Ana, California, 92706. Directions to the service are available from the Mortuary by calling 714.542.3949. A reception will follow the memorial service at Tustin Presbyterian Church, 225 West Main Street at "C" Street, Tustin, California, in the Fellowship Hall. The family invites all who wish to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the John Ashe Memorial Fund. Checks may be sent to the UC Riverside Foundation (noting the John Ashe Memorial Fund), 252A Highlander Hall, University of California, Riverside, California, 92521. Planning for a campus memorial service is underway.

Sincerely,

France A. Córdova
Chancellor
