The Washington Center Program has selected its fifteen UCR Students
for Spring Quarter 2003. Students for next quarter come from a variety
of majors and areas of interest, ranging from Liberal Studies, Economics,
Economics Administrative Studies, Sociology, English, Philosophy,
Philosophy Law and Study, Business Administration, Political Science
Administration Studies, Political Science International Affairs,
Political Science, and Political Science Law and Society. This program
gives students from all UC campuses an experiential learning opportunity
in the nation’s capitol. During the 10-week stay, students
live in the UC Washington Center, which resides in the heart of
D.C., and houses apartments as well as classrooms. There are various
reasons why students go to the Washington Center Program. Some apply
to focus on academics, while others apply for work experience and
opportunities to network with other students who have similar interests.
Students participate in internships in the nation’s capitol,
take elective courses offered by faculty-in-residence from throughout
the UC system, and have the opportunity to conduct research.
The opportunity is open to all majors with a recommended 3.0 GPA
who complete an application, a resume, a self-statement, and a personal
interview. Letters of recommendation are also required. Space is
limited, with only 15 openings per quarter and 10 per summer. Barbara
Wotherspoon, staff administrator for the program said, “It
gives students the opportunity to network with the shakers and movers
of our country and find out how public policy is shaped that affects
all areas of our lives.” |
