Guest Speakers

Can I provide an honorarium or travel expenses for a guest speaker in my class?

If you wish to invite a guest speaker who is not affiliated with the University, consult with your department chair to determine whether an honorarium and travel expenses can be covered. Some departments reserve these funds for lecture series, colloquia, and conferences, and may not provide funds for individual classes.

Check with your department chair or liaison about restrictions that may apply to international visitors. Some visas preclude a traveler from earning any money in the U.S.; others allow reimbursement of documented travel expenses.

You may also apply for a Faculty Minigrant for an honorarium through the Office of Instructional Development. Check the Call for Applications for updated application deadline information.
