Research

How are royalties and other revenues distributed and how are these funds used?

According to UC Patent Policy, income from UC inventions is distributed to the inventors and for university research. After off-setting out-of-pocket costs for filing of patent applications, the patent income is distributed as follows:

35% to inventors
15% directly to research at inventors' campus,
50% to general royalty pool at campus. (This pays for campus operations related to patent management, including costs for unreimbursed patent filing expenses, and other research expenses.)

Please note that this refers to patent royalties. Royalties from university held copyright materials are managed by the VC Administration and royalties are negotiated for each particular situation.
