Leaves of Absence

What are the policies on maternity, paternity, and family leave?

A female academic appointee may obtain "childbearing leave with or without pay for the period prior to, during, and after childbirth, during which no duties shall be required by the University." Leave for childbirth and recovery normally will be for six weeks, although more time may be granted for medical reasons. Official policies are described in the Academic Personnel Manual, section 760. To request leave with or without pay, ask your department for the appropriate forms.

Parental leave without pay may be granted to academic appointees for the purpose of carrying out childrearing responsibilities. In addition, any academic appointee having substantial responsibility for the care of an infant or an adopted child under age five within the first year of the event is eligible for a reduction in normal work duties (usually teaching) while receiving full pay. See the Academic Personnel Manual, section 760 for official policies on parental leave and modified duties during active service.

There are provisions for stopping the "tenure clock" for a variety of reasons including childbearing and parental leave; consult the Academic Personnel Manual, section 133 for more information or check the online summary of the policy provisions.

Leave with or without pay may also be granted to care for the serious health condition of a family member.
