What is the University Seal?

The 1884 Orders of the Regents stated that the University of California seal “shall be of the size of a Mexican dollar, and the legend around the rim shall be ‘University of California Organized 1868.’” The seal designed by Tiffany and Company in 1910 bears, in addition, the Latin motto “Fiat Lux.” Sometime between 1949 and 1953, a seal bearing the English translation, “Let there be light,” came to be used and has remained in use to this day.
