Dr. Stefanie Sanford is the Deputy Director for National Initiatives for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, directing national policy development and advocacy grant-making in education. Prior to joining the Gates Foundation, Dr. Sanford served as Deputy Director of Policy for Texas Governor Rick Perry, as well as worked in a range of other capacities in the Texas state government. After taking leave from the State to pursue graduate study, she was selected to be a White House Fellow, where she served in the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs. She has written extensively on a range of public policy topics and her first book, Civic Life in the Information Age, will be published in February 2007.
Dr. Sanford holds a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in political communication and information technology from the University of Texas at Austin.
