UC Riverside Extension has eight $600 scholarships available to UCR students for the “Japanese Culture Program.”

Participating students spend 10 days in Japan from June 25 to July 26 studying at Fukuyama University while living with a Japanese family. This is ideal for those who are interested in learning more about Japanese culture or those who are planning to visit Japan for the first time.

Students study Japanese history, religion and politics; Ikebana, the art of flower arranging; Japanese food and cooking; the tea ceremony; and cultural mores, fashion and style. Students take several day trips including visits to Hiroshima Peace Park, Fukuyamah Noh Theater, the Mazda plant, the Miyajima, Itukushimja Shrine, Kosan Temple, the Japan Footwear Museum, and the Japan Folk & Doll Museum.

The fee is $900, which includes room and board. Airfare, textbooks and travel incidentals are not included.
