Total time in the Assistant rank is 8 years; if not promoted in the 7th year, the 8th year is terminal.
Fifth-year appraisal occurs during the fifth year, with review beginning in the fall.
Faculty at open steps do not have to prepare a merit file; however, all faculty must be reviewed every five years per the APM. This evaluation is called a quinquennial review.
